Quick Take: Patek Philippe Ref. 514

Here at www.aircooltime.com, you can discover my early 2025 article covering this incredibly rare reference in depth. The 514 is the cool, art deco-style reference that laid the groundwork for later iconic rectangular references to follow from Patek Philippe.

Now we have what appears to be the eighth example known in steel. The rose markers and hands on this example provide a nice contrast to the steel case. It’s shown fitted on a generic stretch rivet bracelet.

I’ll share a visual breakdown of this example’s key components below. Please excuse the image quality, as pictures were taken on site at OMBAS with less than ideal lighting. Here we go…

The dial signature features the early hand graved, enameled signature type and sub-seconds. The markers are alternating Roman numerals and sticks with baton hands. All markers and hands are in rose gold.

Many of the very few examples known have dials with poorly restored features. This one appears to be well preserved.

The case with its graduated, triple stepped sides and lugs is thick and proportional.

Both side profiles show the arched “railway” design that hugs the wrist.

Note the last two digits of the case number are stamped on each inner, opposing side.

The case back has an arced back to complement the upper case geometry.

The crown-side inner case is stamped with the last three digits of the case serial. The crown appears to be original.

The cal. 9-90 movement is twice stamped with the Geneva seal. The overall condition is very well preserved with no evidence of corrosion.

I would date the watch to circa 1940, with a margin of ±1–2 years. Given its extreme rarity, examples like this seldom surface.
