Are Enamel Dials Really that Fragile?

One of the most persistent myths surrounding the Patek Philippe Reference 2526 is that its enamel dial is inherently fragile — and prone to cracking simply through normal wear.

This 12-second video offers a rather practical counterargument.

Here, a first-series enamel-dial ref. 2526 —fitted with a rare Ponti Gennari Type G “lobster” bracelet — is being worn while its owner works with a handsaw. While I wouldn’t necessarily recommend woodworking as a standard test procedure, this enamel-dial ref. 2526 is being worn during considerably more vibration and activity than it would encounter in normal daily life.

As I discussed in my recent article for Collectability HERE, cracks found in vintage ref. 2526 enamel dials are often attributed to age or wear. In reality, many are more likely the result of stresses introduced during servicing, particularly when the dial is removed and subsequently reinstalled.

Enamel is certainly a hard, vitreous material — but that does not mean an enamel dial is destined to crack from simply being worn.

Perhaps the best evidence that these watches were made to be worn. These watches were not painstakingly made to live permanently in a safe.
