Following my recent discussion about engraved, enameled dials, I wanted to take a closer look at another fascinating example: this Patek Philippe Ref. 565 with a highly desirable Breguet dial.

Vintage dial descriptions have increasingly become dependent on quick judgments: original or restored, mint or damaged, untouched or altered.
But the reality is often much more nuanced.
What can careful and informed study actually tell us? How was the dial constructed? Which details appear to be part of its original manufacture, which were altered and which characteristics reflect the passage of time?
This Patek ref. 565 from the late ‘40’s with the very desirable Breguet dial configuration offers an excellent opportunity to slow down and ask a simple question:
What are we really looking at?
